Background of Dagabhuiyan Upazila
Naming and ancient history of the upazila: The former name of Daganbhuiyan upazila is Gopiganj 
/ Gupiganj which was ruled under Bhuliya state. A review of history shows that the name of the wife 
of the eminent zamindar Shri Arun Singh Bahadur was Shri Gopidevi who took charge of her husband's 
zamindari. From then the zamindari state became known as Gopiganj after his name. According to 
Jamir Ahmed, during the reign of Prince Sujar, the son of the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan, 
two prominent persons named Matubhuiyan and Daganbhuiyan of one of the sub-clans of 
the Barobhuiyans settled in the western part of Feni at that time. It is believed that one of the two 
persons, Matubhuiyan and Daganbhuiyan, now resides in a bhuiyan house and the other in the 
vicinity of Daganbhuiyan Dighi. According to whose name the area is known as Daganbhuiyan.
 
History of the past near the upazila: Daganbhuiyan under Feni subdivision was transformed into 
Daganbhuiyan thana in 1979 as part of the greater Noakhali formed for the administrative needs of 
the British government in 1876. Feni subdivision was abolished and Feni was transformed into a 
district in March 1984 and later in 1983 Daganbhuiyan police station was upgraded to Daganbhuiyan 
Upazila. At present Daganbhuiyan consists of 01 municipality, 08 unions, 100 mouzas and 152 villages. 
Daganbhuiyan Feni River flooded village. Many of the best children of the nation have been born in this 
upazila. As proud as the people of this upazila are to be their successors, this town is also blessed. 
The heroic children have played an important role in all the historical movements and struggles of the 
country including the language movement of 1952, the mass uprising against Ayub in 1969 and above 
all the great liberation war of 1971. Among the children of Daganbhuiyan's works are language martyr 
Abdus Salam, Sufi saint Dewan Hafez Abdur Rashid, Pakistan-era minister Hamidul Haque Chowdhury, 
journalist Zahur Hossain Chowdhury, Dr. Ferdous Ahmed Qureshi, eminent industrialist Abdul Awal Mintu, 
politician Saber Hossain Chowdhury, Air Vice Marshal AG Mahmud, Air Vice Marshal Sultan Mahmud, 
Election Commissioner Abdur Rashid, RAJUK Chairman Engineer Nurul Huda, eminent sportsmen and 
more.
